Junior High 2nd At State TMSCA

June 12, 2017

The Wylie Junior High Math Team finished 2nd overall at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association State Competition in April, led by a strong group of 6th-graders.

The Calculator Team of Ava DePrang, David DePrang, Vincent Merado and Conner Brown won 1st place as a team in the state competition, and Connor won 1st place individually in the 6th Grade Division of Calculator and Math. He also finished 2nd in Number Sense and 6th in Science and medaled as part of three Wylie teams.

The 6th-graders were so dominant in their division at the competition that Wylie finished in the top four spots individually in Calculator and won three of the top 4 spots in Math and four of the top five spots in Number Sense.

At the TMSCA State Competition, students compete against the best Class 4A students from all over the state.  Students compete individually against other students in their grades in four contests – Math, Number Sense, Calculator and Science. The top four scores in each contest, regardless of grade, make up the school’s team. Students had to qualify at a regional competition to attend.

On the gold-medal Calculator Team, Ava is an 8th-grader, Vincent a 7th-grader, and both David and Conner are 6th-graders.

Wylie’s Math Team of Geoffrey Englin, Connor Brown, Ayden Gertiser and Ava DePrang finished 3rd in the state. The Science Team of Kade Killion, Elise Grimland, Fred Wylie and Gregory Clements also finished 3rd. The Number Sense Team of Nitin Kalla, Vincent Mercado, Connor Brown and Ayden Gertiser took 4th place.
