Wylie pole-vaulter Kylor Aguilar won a silver medal at the UIL State Track Meet in May, and Wylie’s 1600-relay team of Leandra Benton, Abbigayle Gollihar, Brianna Douglas and Abbey Henson earned bronze.
Kylor jumped 15 feet at the state meet to claim 2nd place. The Wylie freshman made steady progress this season, winning a district championship with a jump of 14 feet, then finishing 2nd at the area meet with the same height. He improved to 14 feet 3 inches at the Regional Meet to claim 2nd place and a state berth. At regionals, he out jumped the guy who beat him at area, and at state he out jumped the guy who beat him at regionals.
The 1600-relay team also made steady improvement, winning district with a time of 4:04:07, and winning the area championship with a 4:04.59. The team came in 2nd at regionals with a 4:03:03 before running the state meet in 3:58:20.
Madi Latham qualified for regionals in three different events, the triple jump, long jump and the 300 hurdles. She finished 2nd in the hurdles to earn a state berth, and then finished in 5th place at state with a time of 45.77.
Leandra Benton was the only Wylie athlete to compete in two events at state. Along with her bronze as part of the relay team, she ran the 800 in 2:21.17 to finish 5th. She finished 3rd in the event at district and area, but reduced her time by almost 5 seconds at regionals to earn the state berth.
Also qualifying for state was Gatlin Martin in the 300 hurdles. Gatlin won the district championship, area championship and was 2nd at regionals to earn the state berth. He finished 8th with a time of 39.44. Gatlin is a key member of the Wylie baseball team, and the night before the state meet, he helped Wylie come from behind and win a key playoff game. Despite the quick turnaround from baseball to the state track meet, he still managed to shave some time off his regional time of 39.61.
Gatlin also qualified for the regional meet in the 100 hurdles, after winning the district and area championships in that event. He finished 3rd at regionals in that event, just missing a trip to state.
Brandon Sanders also qualified for regionals in two events, the 100 and 200 runs, as did Andrea Brekke in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Wylie had three girls qualify for regionals in the 300 hurdles, Andrea Brekke, Madi Latham and Kylie Thornton.
Here is a look at the Wylie students who finished in the top 4 at area and advanced to region.
