The Wylie Academic Team won the regional championship at UIL competition on April 17, and 12 Wylie students qualified to compete at state.
Ayden Gertiser won two regional championships – one in Calculator Applications and the other in Number Sense. He also qualified for state in a third event by placing 2nd in math.
Caleb Speights was regional champion in informative speaking; and Melia Messer was champion in Poetry Interpretation. They led Wylie’s speech team to 1st place as a group.
Connor Brown qualified for state in two events by placing 2nd in Current Issues and 2nd in Social Studies. Other students who qualified for state were:
- Nathan Vincent finished 2nd in Computer Science.
- Mason Kerby finished 2nd in Poetry Interpretation.
- Wesley Horn finished 3rd in Prose Interpretation.
- The Wylie Number Sense team of Ayden Gertiser, Sanay Salvi, Timothy Varghese and Nitin Kalla qualified for state as the No. 1 team at regionals.
- The Calculator Applications team of Ayden Gertiser, Vincent Mercado, Tommy Thomas and Sanay Salvi also finished first.
