Nital Patel and Max Tadvick won the 4A Boy Doubles State Tennis Championship in May, and two other Wylie doubles teams also won state medals.
Ashley Smyser and Emly Corn advanced to the state championship game, but fell short and claimed 2nd place in girl’s doubles. Jared Clemmer and Sabra Zullo earned 3rd place in mixed doubles.
Nital and Max had each won a state championship before, but were paired together for the first time this year and drew the difficult task of keeping Wylie’s state championship streak alive. Wylie has won the state boys doubles title for the last six years.
They were up to the task. The pair cruised to a district title by beating fellow Wylie teammates Reese Allen and Noah Santee. Then the pair earned a 6-2, 6-3 regional title to earn the right to go to state.
At the state meet, the pair cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over a team from Center in the quarterfinals and a 6-2, 6-3 victory over a team from Fredericksburg in the semifinals. That put the duo in the finals against Kilgore.
They won easily 6-2, 6-1.
Ashley and Emly beat a team from Van in the quarterfinals 6-4, 7-6 (1). They beat Fredericksburg in the second round in another tough battle 6-4, 7-5. That put the pair into the state championship game against Vernon, and the Wyle girls lost 6-2, 6-0.
Jared Clemmer and Sabra Zullo beat a team from Boerne in the state quarterfinals, and then met a team from Kaufman in the next round. The Wylie pair won the first game easily 6-0, but then fell 2-6 in the second game. The third game went to 5-7 with the Wylie pair on the short side.
Wylie freshman Kaitlyn Hathorn also qualified for state in her first opportunity in girl’s singles, but fell short to a girl from Bellville.
Congratulations to the tennis players for a great season.
