Seven Wylie Destination Imagination teams qualified for state in nine different challenges during a virtual Regional Competition with awards announced Sunday at the Wylie Performing Arts Center.
The Metallic Chickens, a team of Wylie freshman, won first place in two different challenges. They competed in both the Engineering and the Service Learning challenges and not only won first place but also had the top Instant Challenge score in each challenge. Five members of the team also received the Magellan Award.
Four other Wylie teams also won 1st place in their challenges, earning automatic bids to state. They are:
• Galaxy Goats, Scientific Challenge, elementary division. They also had the top Instant Challenge score of their challenge.
• Detective Ducks, Improv/Forensic Science Challenge, elementary division. This team of Wylie 5th-graders also had the top Instant Challenge score of their challenge.
• The Science Alliance, Technical Challenge, middle school division.
• Oddly Uncommon, Technical Challenge, secondary division.
Lava Latte also qualified for state in two challenges, taking 2nd place in the secondary division of both the Engineering and Improv/Forensic Science challenges. Teams who finish 2nd do not get an automatic bid to state, but once all the scores from the regional meets across the state are received, the highest-scoring 2nd place teams are invited. Lava Latte got that bid in both of their challenges.
Also, the Odd Screaming Bananas finished 2nd in the elementary division of the Improv/Forensic Science Challenge and got a bid to state.
The Laser Pigeons, a middle school team competing in the Technical Challenge, finished 7th in the competition.
Normally, DI travels to the Fort Worth area for the regional meet, but because of COVID, the students competed via zoom this year. They gathered at the Performing Arts Center on Sunday, where they watched the awards ceremony together on YouTube.
Students will now prepare for the State Tournament, where they will be attempting to win a bid to the Global Tournament. State results will be announced April 10.
