From campus to campus, Wylie bulldogs celebrated veterans across the Wylie community in various ways and with their own touch. For Wylie West Elementary, this meant proudly presenting their second grade Veteran’s Day program, something second grade teacher Megan Oliver believes has been presented for over 15 years.
What is extra special about this performance is that a veteran from the Abilene community is selected to be recognized for his or her service. At 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, the second graders recognized Thomas Miller for serving in the US Army, sharing his personal story with the audience and presenting him with a certificate of appreciation. Veterans who have been recognized over the years include:
Downing Bolls – US Marines
David Price – US Air Force Vietnam
William Payne – US Army
Richard Arthur – US Army
Norman Dominguez – US Air Force
Johnnie Reves – US Army
Paul Johnson – US Air Force
Mike Ricker – US Navy
Stephen Ricker – US Marines
Ira Gray – US Navy WWII
Lucille Hunter – WAVES WWII
Glenn Proctor – US Navy WWII
James Merrell – US Navy WWII
Frank Brnovak – US Army WWII
In addition to recognizing Miller, the students sang “God Bless America” along with the high school’s Show Choir and shared facts about veterans and their roles throughout American history. This year’s performance will stand out as even more special since it is the first time for the students to take the stage at the Wylie Performing Arts Center.
