Bits of News From Around the District
Beary Realistic
Shyrl Martinez just can’t help herself when it comes to children’s books. The East Elementary librarian, who has a hard time containing her creative mind, recently built an eight-foot replica of the main character in the book “I Want My Hat Back” by author Jon Klassen, a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor-winning author.
In the story, the bear is on the hunt to find his hat, asking fellow animal friends if they have it. Martinez said she was shooting for six feet, but by the time she was done there was an extra two. Martinez also created several other characters and plants from the story that are located in other areas of the library.
High Five Friday
The students at Wylie West Elementary school were greeted on Jan. 18 by McMurry’s football players and Coach Mark Rau, and kindergartener Robert Wakefield was quick enough to grab a quick photo as he headed to Mrs. Harper’s class. Younger campuses across Wylie ISD regularly have student groups from various organization pop-in to pump students up as they head into school because, let’s face it, everyone can use a high-five to start their day!
Swoosh! There It Is
No. 20 Isaiah Carrillo reached 1000 career points on Jan. 21 when Wylie went head-to-head with their crosstown rivals at Cooper High School. In addition to sinking the basketball to ring in his thousandth career point, the senior guard helped the Bulldogs beat the Cougars 54-26!
Great Things Come in a Doll Package
West Junior High sixth-grader Kynzie Colmery was recently honored to have her story included on the packaging of two Generation Dolls. Colmery was selected as a Generation Doll representative for her many acts of volunteerism in the Abilene community. Misty Davis, Kynzie’s mother, said her daughter’s story was one of 12 selected nationwide to appear on their website and packaging. According to ourgeneration.com, the dolls have been created to inspire children to build a life of service, kindness, adventure and acceptance. Kynzie shared what it’s like to have her story on a product sold in 45 countries.
“It’s an extremely rare and amazing opportunity. I feel so blessed and am so grateful that I got to be on the box. For anyone that sees this, being a good person will pay off so keep being you and don’t let other people bring you down.”
