Four Advance To State VASE Contest

Four Wylie students had their artwork chosen to advance to state during competition at the Region 14 VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) Competition in late February.

Joyce Blanton and Shali Shah from Stacy Sanchez’ Art 3 class each had a piece chosen to advance, and Cara McFarland and Makenzie Bierma from Art 1 classes also will advance to state.

Wylie hosted the regional competition, which included 286 entries from nine different schools in the Region 14 area.  The artwork is given a grade from 1-4 with 4 being the best.

About 10 percent of the entries from each of the state’s regions are chosen to advance to the state competition. Fourteen pieces were chosen from Region 14, including the four Wylie students.

An impressive 37 entries from Wylie medaled by receiving the top rating of 4.

Students who medaled in the competition were Taylor Brooks, Katie Carlton, Hannah Daffenbough, Heather Donecker, Neve Draco, Katlyn Drummond, Austin Fairley, Hailey Moore, Kaitlyn Hicks, Andrea McMillan, Anthony Medina, Ashley Milligan, Celine Nguyen, Shruti Patel, Paris Randell, Jillian Ruiz, Shaela Smith, Zoe Smith, Alexis Sotelo, Taylor Stephenson, Cali Stevens, RhiannonStiltner, Faith Archambeau and Ashleigh Duboise. Many of the students had more than one piece earn top honors.

Also, Kamwren Jackson, Mariah Maldonado and Rachel Draper each earned a 3 rating on their works.

The Wylie students who qualified for state were honored at a reception at the Cockerell Gallery in Abilene in March.  They will compete at state April 22-23 in San Antonio.

Shaili Shah qualified for state with her Colored Pencil piece titled “Downward Stare.”

Cara McFarland is  going to state with her shelf portrait titled “Cara”

Makenzie Bierma is going to state with her mixed media variety titled “Hummingbird.”
