Family Ties

January 19, 2026

Long hours and hard work are nothing new to students who participate in Wylie Theatre. The fall production of Disney’s Newsies was no different, and with 65 student actors and crew members working hard to bring the best production to the stage, the group became tightly knit. One might say like a family. However, for ten of the cast members that was actually true.

From left to right, front to back, are siblings Cale and Reece Harvey, Kinley and Clayton George, Avyn and Ashytn Kershner, Fletcher and Daisy Smith, and Callie and Taylor Wood. All sibling couples “bookend” each other as freshman and seniors except for the Kershner brothers. Ashtyn is a senior, and Avyn is a sixth grader at West Junior High.

This was the first performance for Avyn to work alongside his older brother.

“I had a blast,” said Avyn. “He is such a good actor and has given me tips before, but it is different when he is in the show with me.”

Ashtyn agreed with his little brother about the opportunity being fun and memorable.

“It was cool to see our relationship develop as the characters, but also as brothers through that, and to have my last performance, and only, with Avyn was something really special,” said Ashtyn.
