Clay Shoot, Bunco Benefit Project Graduation

March 13, 2017

Wylie’s Project Graduation Committee has three more big projects coming up in the next six weeks as it heads into the home stretch of its yearlong fundraising campaign.

Those include a Clay Shoot, a Bunco party and concessions stand at the district track meet. The committee could use the support of the Wylie community in all three efforts.

Project Graduation is an all-night party that parents host for seniors on the night of their graduation.

“It is a great way for the kids to be safe on graduation night,” said senior parent Leslie Wilson. “It’s a great way for them to make memories.”

The students spend the night doing fun activities, including playing Casino games, jumping on inflatables, eating food and winning tons of prizes. The event takes about $100,000 to pull off, and the senior parents start working to raise that money early in their children’s senior year.

“You just keep going until you have the money you need,” Wilson said. “It really takes all 230 sets of parents to do different things to make it happen.”

The biggest fund-raisers for Project Graduation are the fall Draw Down and the 50/50 Fundraiser at home football games. But those only raise about a third of he money needed, meaning senior parents are left to come up with other ideas.

In the fall, the committee hosted two dances, created and sold cookbooks and had senior students sell chocolate bars. Those efforts raised about half the money.

This spring three more fundraisers are on tap.

Bunco returns on March 30. Bunco has been a success for Project Graduation in recent years. The event will include food and a silent auction and will have an 80s theme.

The Clay Shoot will be March 25.

“This is a new thing,” Wilson said. “We will have prizes. Hopefully we can get a lot of people out there shooting.”

And the final project will be operating the concession stand at the district track meet on April 11-12. The committee plans to cookout and sell pulled pork or sausage wraps in addition to the usual concession stand items.

Also, cookbooks still are available for purchase.
