Class of 2025 Graduates #3-10

May 29, 2025

You’ve met Wylie’s top two graduates of the Class of 2025, but they are just the beginning of a fantastic group seniors. We are pleased to introduce No. 3-10! They get real about who they are and what makes them who they are.

No. 3

Ava Ramos

Abilene Christian University

English on the Pre-Law track/double-minor in Spanish & Government

Advice to Under Classman

Get out of your shell! I wasted the first two years of high school burdened by insecurities and fear of what others would think. Who cares? Dance around, laugh at your teacher’s jokes even if no one else does, sign up for school trips. Participate in things that are FUN and that will allow you to express yourself in ways you don’t normally. I have made some of my best memories–and best friends–by allowing myself to step out of my comfort zone.

School Activity, Class, or Teacher Impact

Definitely my language classes–Mrs. Gilreath, Mrs. Kirby, Mrs. Taylor, and Mr. Crumbliss all helped me realize my love of language learning and the ways in which language could be used to express ideas boldly and craft compelling arguments; I was nothing short of thrilled when I found out that English, the subject for which I found within myself so much passion, could be studied with a pre-law focus! These teachers always went above and beyond, structuring their lesson plans and coming up with creative activities in a way that made me (seriously) look forward to their classes each and every day!

Most Cherished Memory

The weekend of this year’s Academic UIL Regional competition is one I will always remember fondly. Our team (Spelling & Vocabulary, consisting of myself, Justice McGuiness, Tehzeeb Grewal, and Tessa Jones) was motivated; we had been studying our hardest for weeks and constantly building each other up with words of encouragement. The night before the competition, we met downstairs at the hotel for one last study session. We did have about an hour and a half of productive studying, but the rest of the time was spent with us all either in fits of giggles or listening to our wonderful coach, Mrs. Kirby, speak uplifting words and join us in our contemplation of life’s mysteries (haha). It was the most fun I’d ever had on any school trip. I was determined to advance to the state competition, (truly) not because I wanted a medal, scholarships, or any kind of glory, but because I did not want these moments with the team I loved so dearly to end. The next day, following three hours in a testing room that could be described as comical at best, a trip to the Texas Tech Honors College Starbucks, and intense prayer, our team took first place, and we were granted that coveted ticket to State. I have never been more thrilled to find out that my next few weeks would consist of intense studying and test preparation; I was entirely grateful that my time on the UIL Academics team was not yet coming to an end.

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

One of my greatest challenges came with my enrollment in AP Physics. I already knew the sciences were neither my favorite nor my strong suit, but I went ahead and chose to take the class simply because it was another AP. The first few weeks were BRUTAL. I was so confused, and several of the assignments had me in tears. I was just about to drop the class, but Mr. Cumby encouraged me not to. His words of encouragement and reassurance helped me realize that the thing causing me the greatest anxiety was not the subject of physics itself, but rather the fact that I was, for once, totally lost in a subject. That might sound silly, but before AP Physics, I had seriously never been forced to come to terms with the fact that I would not always be able to figure things out on my own. It threw me for a loop, but realizing this ultimately led me to tackle the challenging classwork to the best of my ability and with minimal stress. Though this class was easily the most challenging I have taken to date, it certainly led me to some much-needed self-reflection and growth as both a student and person.

Your Inspiration

I strive to let my faith guide every aspect of my life. I am certain that I would not be in this position–and would have accomplished nothing at all–without the strength and love of the Lord. Additionally, I am able to find the most wonderful support system in my close friends and family members. My parents, my grandparents, and my sister consistently offer me the support and encouragement I need, and I could not be more grateful for them. My best friend, Tehzeeb Grewal, is a total academic machine but also the kindest and most humble person I know; she too inspires me to be the best (and most loving) version of myself!

A Proud Moment

I am extremely proud to have partnered with Mrs. Taylor to found Culture Club and to have served as its president. Culture Club is an extracurricular activity unlike any other I have been involved in. We invite students to educate others on their unique cultures through presentations, crafts, and games. My fellow officers, Vice President Lorly Sardual and Activities Coordinator Adah Haro, have made running each of our meetings a breeze and a blast, and all of the club’s members are the brightest, most fun people to be around! I feel that this club has helped to unify students in addition to educating them on important aspects of the world around them. I am so thankful to have had a hand in creating such a wonderful community within our school.

Who Knew?

I love poetry. I actually have a collection of poems I’ve worked on over the last two years. I hope to finish it and have a book made and published before I graduate college!

Gratitude Check

I would like to thank ALL of my teachers, past and present, as well as each one of my friends and family members. Specifically, I would like to thank my mother for listening to me prattle on about my teenage life’s affairs every evening and offering such steadfast love and support, and I would like to thank my father for being the greatest leader, coach, and teacher I have ever known. Most of all, I’d like to thank my God, who has made a way for me in every season of my life.

No. 4

Lorly Sardual

Texas Tech University

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

There was a time when I was just overwhelmed with everything in my junior year. The activities in and out of school really took a toll on me, and I was struggling to juggle everything at once. Later, I came to the realization that time management goes a long way. Creating a structured schedule, breaking down tasks, and limiting distractions were essential to overcome this challenge of mine. Because of time management, I became more efficient, and it made me more organized than ever.

A Proud Moment

A while ago, I began my martial arts journey. It was a bit rocky at first because martial arts requires a calm mind, which took time for me to develop. Eventually, with the help of my peers and masters, I put in the work and became a candidate for the black belt test, and I was put into training sessions immediately. In December 2023, I earned my black belt in martial arts. The test itself was physically and mentally strenuous, but the pain was worth it despite losing one of my contacts during the exam. The path of martial arts taught me the fundamentals of defense and the values of life, and the lessons that I received from my mentors are what I abide by.

School Activity, Class or Teacher Impact

Mrs. Lang is the most encouraging, compassionate, and dependable woman I’ve met. She taught medical terminology, a class that I thoroughly enjoyed in sophomore year, and I remember how motivated I was to do well in her class. In the middle of the year, I was unsure if I was going to move forward with my plan of becoming a nurse; Mrs. Lang changed that. She gave me her full support and advised me to push through in my academic endeavors. Every time that I would see her in person, I would greet her with the biggest smile and the biggest hug. Mrs. Lang is a brilliant teacher, and she has made such an impact on who I am today and who I will become one day.

Most Cherished Memory

My most cherished memory is dancing to a song from Just Dance on YouTube with my classmates before a jazz band concert.

Advice for Under Classmen

My advice for them is to prioritize yourself, too. Putting yourself first can really prepare you for the physical and mental challenges that you encounter as you progress with age. You would be really equipped for the real world, and your life would be fulfilled.

Your Inspiration

My family because they’re the most resilient and caring group of people.

Who Knew?

What people don’t really know about me is that I love word search puzzles.

Gratitude Check

I would like to thank my teachers, my family, my friends, and my church members for helping me to reach where I am today. Special thanks to my sister and my biggest fan, Samantha, for always believing in me and motivating me to do my very best.

No. 5

Paul Carper

The University of Texas at Austin

Accounting

Your Inspiration

What inspires me are my parents and brother, who have all overcome so many things in their lives. My brother was born with Down Syndrome and encountered more hardship in his first week than I have in my whole life, but he is still the happiest and most positive person I have ever seen. My mother faced many ordeals due to her status as a first-generation immigrant, but she persevered and was able to go to school and become a teacher. My father has worked basically every day since he was 15 and he is still going strong; they all push me to be the best that I can in their own ways.

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

I had to quit basketball my freshman year due to injury, so I had to find things to fill up my time. It eventually led me to many of my current favorite hobbies. It taught me that there was always something to be gained when you lose another thing.

Advice for Under Classmen

Just try and have fun, it won’t always be sunshine and roses, but there’s always a lesson to be learned or a good time to be had.

School Activity, Class or Teacher Impact

UIL and Mrs. Martinez

Most Cherished High School Memory

State UIL in 2023

A Proud Moment

The 2023 UIL Calculator title is most important to me because it was the first time I could see my accomplishments and skills displayed on a larger scale than just my school or region. It gave me the motivation to apply myself more in both UIL and my general school activities. It is one of the biggest reasons I have been able to be so successful in my later years of high school.

Who Knew?

I am really into horror movies/games.

Gratitude Check

Thank you to Mrs. Martinez, Mr. Dowell, Mrs. Evenden, Mrs. Kirby and Sal Khan

No. 6

Logan Laitinen

University of Texas, Austin

Law

A Proud Moment

The accomplishment I am most proud of is consistently moving up in rank each time it was evaluated. This reflects not just a single moment of success, but ongoing dedication, hard work, and personal growth. Each step toward this achievement has required me to push my limits, stay focused on school, and learn how to manage my time effectively to succeed. It serves as a reminder that hard work and perseverance truly pay off and continues to motivate me to give my best in everything I do.

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

One challenge that I have overcome during my high school experience is that my mom lives out of state. This forced me to choose between visiting her or staying in school to avoid accumulating absences. Through this, I’ve learned that physical presence isn’t the only way to show love—what truly matters is the effort someone puts in to stay connected, even from a distance. It has also taught me to appreciate every moment and every small gesture.

My Inspiration

My older sister is a source of inspiration for me. I’ve looked up to her my entire life, and she continues to impress me with her drive and determination. She recently graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, all while working two jobs. I strive to show the same level of commitment and resilience when I’m in college.

Who Knew?

One thing most people don’t know about me is that hiking is one of my favorite hobbies. I’ve visited most of the National Parks in the U.S. and even a few out of the country. I’ve also gone on several month-long road trips focused entirely on hiking, and I’ve loved every single one.

School activity, Class or Teacher Impact

Every teacher I’ve had in high school has made an impact on me in some way, but the ones who really stood out were the ones who taught me more than just what was on the syllabus. Dr. Hood, my honors chemistry teacher, did just that. While her class pushed me to think critically, it was her kindness outside of class that really made a difference. I’ll never forget when she brought my family iced tea when we were stuck on the side of the road. It was such a simple thing, but it taught me that the most important lessons often come from how you treat people, not just what you teach. That’s something I’ll always carry with me.

Most Cherished High School Moment

Many students, when presented with this question, would mention something big or notable. And while I do love those big memories, I hope that when I look back on my time in high school, I remember the little things. I cherish the small moments—playing games in class with my friends, going on class trips, and participating in silly competitions. It’s those countless little memories that mean the most to me.

Advice for Under Classmen

My biggest piece of advice for any underclassmen trying to make the most out of their high school experience is to make sure you take time for yourself! High school can be stressful and a lot of work, but make sure you take time to “stop and smell the roses,” hang out with your friends, go to all the school dances, etc. It’s cliche but it really is over before you know it.

Gratitude Check

I would like to thank my mom and dad for always supporting me and pushing me to do the best I can, and then to do even better than that. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without them.

Advice for Under Classmen

The biggest thing I learned is to get involved in activities. This helps you get more connections as well as challenge new experiences.

A Proud Moment

My DI team was awarded first place for a section of our competition at the global level of competition last year. This was a hard-earned achievement for my whole team, and we spent months preparing for the competition. I am proud of this accomplishment because we worked together and placed ahead of teams from all over the world.

School Activity, Class or Teacher Impact

Destination Imagination (DI) is the activity that impacted me the most. I have participated in DI since fifth grade, and I was taught life lessons and learned many other social and technical skills.

Most Cherished High School Memory

My most cherished high school memory was when my DI team went to our last competition at the global level my freshman year. We traveled to Kansas City, Missouri and spent a week there. We competed, talked to the other teams, and spent time with my team.

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

A challenge I overcame was balancing school with all the activities I was in. There were times much worse than others, and I was overwhelmed. From those experiences, I learned how to manage time better, and my work ethic was strengthened.

My Inspiration

My family gives me inspiration because they had to endure tough times, and they are always providing for me. They support me and help me reach my goals.

Who Knew?

A hobby I have is collecting crystals and fossils. Over the years, I have added to my collection, and I got introduced to it by my brother when he started his own collection.

Gratitude Check

I would like to thank my family and friends. They have all helped me succeed in my activities, and I would not be here without them.

No. 8

Maya McCarty

Abilene Christian University

Interior Architecture & Design

School Activity, Class or Teacher Impact

The Wylie Varsity Belles drill team has impacted who I am today in many ways. It taught me countless lessons, and it has built me into the person I am now. I was a lieutenant for my senior year, and being able to lead a program I care so much about was the biggest blessing. The girls on the team are some of the greatest people I know, and they inspired me every day to become a better person. Dancing in belles brought me so much joy, and all the lessons I have learned will stay with me forever.

My Inspiration

The people I surround myself with inspire me to be the best version of myself. By seeing the positive aspects of others, I am able to channel them into my own life.

Advice to Under Classmen

Try new things, even if it’s not what everyone else is doing. The important people in your life just want to see you happy and doing what you love.

Most Cherished High School Memory

I don’t have a specific favorite memory, but I always loved pep rallies. I enjoyed performing at them, but I also just liked having a time where the whole school could have fun together.

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

My freshman year, I struggled with the transition into high school and finding a balance between school and the things I enjoyed. I had to learn how to think positively and how to make the most of that time in my life.

A Proud Moment

I am proud that I made Belles’s lieutenant my senior year. It took a lot of hard work, but I am happy I got to be a leader on a team that means so much to me.

Who Knew?

My family has moved a lot due to my dad’s job. By sixth grade, I had been to six different schools. Since then, I have gone to Wylie, and I’m grateful that I got to stay here and graduate here.

Gratitude Check

I would like to thank my parents for always pushing me to do my best and being proud of me no matter what.

No. 9

Annabelle Gertiser

Linguistics and Foreign Literature

A Proud Moment

The proudest moment of my high school career to this day was the day I was told I received second place at the Valentine Classic meet my junior year because in that moment I knew that my friend, who I had brought into the competition, coached, and studied with, beat me. Nothing I personally achieved ever compared to the pride I felt that day.

Who Knew?

I’m learning how to speak German, Latin, and Greek!

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

When I was in middle school, I was fully into competitive math and science. It was what I knew. It was what I was good at, and it was what my brother did. When I reached high school, I made a decision. I traded band for theater. I left investigative math to join ready writing and literary criticism. I left everything I was familiar with for the sake of what I loved. You cannot let yourself wallow in your wrong decisions. When you know it is wrong, leave it behind. There is something better waiting for you when that rope falls away. You have to take a little trust fall, but you’ll catch yourself, and you never have to look back.

Advice for Under Classmen

Find the people you belong with. Find the people that make you smile when you glimpse them in the hall, the ones that you know know you better than you know yourself. Find the people you’d go to the ends of the earth for and the ones that have your back in your worse times. It’s so much easier to do right now. Find your people. Remember that a family isn’t always just blood: sometimes it’s the people that you sit with in the morning or at lunch. It’s the ones who wait outside their classrooms for a hug on a rough day. It’s the ones that stay, no matter what you go through. Those will be the people you remember. And take risks. Sign up for the electives you really want and try the extracurriculars you might not like. Go to the competitions and auditions. High school is time to experiment, not to be perfect. You might end up loving one of those whims.

School Activity, Class or Teacher Impact

I would not be able to choose between my time in UIL, A/V, and Theater. They are all integral to who I have become.

Most Cherished High School Memory

It would have to be the nights I spent at my best friend’s house, lying on the grass and looking up at the stars. We were listening to music, under warm streetlights. We were dancing together under the stars, laughing and singing. For those nights I remembered that we were kids, and for those nights nothing mattered more than the smile on her face.

My Inspiration

Whether I need inspiration to get going with my day or inspiration for a challenging poem, my first detour is always to my playlists. The steady beat of music through my headphones never fails me.

Gratitude Check

Mr. Dowell, Ms. Kirby, Ms. Martinez, Mr. Singleton, and Mr. Shoemake, your extracurriculars shaped these last four years, and I would not be anywhere near where I am today without you. Thank you. Thank you to all of my teachers who touched my path, even if I did not formally have your class, and to my family who pushed me to be my best self in the hardest of times. And to Alora. You’ll always be my soul sister. I wouldn’t be here without you.

Carson Wells

University of Texas, Austin

School Activity, Class or Teacher Impact

Since 3rd grade, Destination Imagination has helped me grow a lot as a person and at school. I have learned a lot of useful life skills and have competed at the Global level three times now. We placed first for our Instant Challenge and top in the world.

A Proud Moment

I am most proud of the friendships I have built because they bring me joy in my life.

Most Cherished High School Memory

My most cherished high school memory was definitely when I went to Globals for the first time. It was like a dream come true for me – one that I had been dreaming about since I was 9.

Overcoming Challenge & Lesson Learned

One of the biggest challenges I overcame was the end of sophomore year, when I was dealing with personal, school, and DI problems. I had several projects due and owed hundreds in fundraising for DI, but I overcame this and learned that with persistence, I get things done.

Advice for Under Classmen

Be yourself, wholeheartedly and don’t care about what the world thinks of you. Do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy. Live life for you.

My Inspiration

My grandma gives me inspiration because she has served as a big role model and guide for me in life.

Who Knew?

I like to collect coins and other money.

Gratitude Check

I’d like to thank everyone who has stayed real and has been there for me.
