Wylie Student Adds New Netflix Show to Acting Repertoire

June 26, 2025

If you’ve already been pulled into the new Netflix show “The Waterfront” (aired June 19), then keep your eye out for Kynzie Colmery. The Wylie West Junior High seventh grader plays young Bree in episodes 6 and 8. The show is being touted by Netflix.com as one of the top 10 trending shows to watch right now and boasts a cast of faces many will recognize including Topher Grace (“That 70’s Show” and Ocean’s Eleven) and Maria Bello (Coyote Ugly).

Over the years, Colmery has built a diverse acting portfolio to include several commercials, the web series called “Kid Ninja” and the HBO miniseries “The Staircase” with Oscar and Golden Globe winning actor Colin Firth. She has also been in several movies and short films and is a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

Colmery has performed locally as well, appearing in McMurry University Theatre’s The Miracle Worker, Abilene Community Theatre’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and the last two musicals presented by Wylie West Junior High Theatre.

According to her mom Misty Davis, Colmery caught the acting bug in kindergarten when she submitted an audition tape to a Texas talent agency. Colmery has worked with talent agent Jillian West at Kit International Talent Agency for years, who Davis credits for helping her daughter grow both in her craft and identity.

“Jillian has helped Kynzie grow as an actor and person,” said Davis. “The focus is on Kynzie being a child who acts, not a child actor, which is very important.”

In addition to acting, Colmery enjoys working behind the camera, having worked on the crew of a short film as well as creating her own short videos and writing scenes and plays. She hopes to continue in the entertainment industry as long as she can, but says she also has other interests like volunteering, especially with animals, and is excited to represent her school as a cheerleader for the 2025-26 school year.

Reflecting on what she enjoys most about acting and how it has impacted her, Colmery said it can be challenging but definitely worthwhile.

“Acting has made me more confident when I meet new people. It also let’s meet have experiences I wouldn’t have otherwise, and I know how lucky I am to get to do it,” she said. “Meeting people is always the best part! Everyone is always so nice. Being on set is also a lot of fun, but memorizing a lot of lines in a short period of time can be hard, especially when you are tired. You learn to push through it.”

Davis said her daughter’s teachers have supported her acting endeavors, from selecting her as “favorite movie character” for one of the school spirit days to sharing acting opportunities.

“Her former choir teacher Mr. Jones told her about “The Waterfront,” and her fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Kinley told her about the lead role she landed in a SAG feature film that has not been released yet,” said Davis. “Wylie has been absolutely amazing supporting her.”
