Cheers to Making History

March 17, 2025

Wylie Varsity Cheer upped the ante at the 2025 UIL State Spirit Championship tying with six-time state champions Crandall High School for first place in the “Best of Category” for their Band Chant routine. This is the first time Wylie Cheer has scored the highest in a category since attending the competition in 2016, which is when the competition was established.

According to results on uiltexas.org, Crandall won the state title this year for the sixth time in competition history. Teams are judged in three categories: fight song, band chant and crowd leading. To win the state championship, a team must score the highest combined score. Wylie competed against 74 squads in the 5A D2 category. Despite Wylie prioritizing school spirit over competing, the team has placed in the top 20 in the state in 2016,2021, 2023 and 2025.

“We always have lots of talent on our squads and good leadership,” said Krystal Martin, varsity cheer coach at Wylie High School. “Many teams start focusing on competition as soon as they name their new squad for the following year. At Wylie, our first priority has been supporting our school and Fall/early Spring sports. Unlike many schools, WHS has pep rallies weekly during football season. This demands a great deal of planning, learning, and practicing from August through November.”
