Little Bulldogs Showed Up Big
More than 600 students participated in for the inaugural year of the Wylie Bulldog Little Dribblers basketball league this past school year. Kids ages 4-12, who live in the Wylie school district, learn the fundamentals of basketball, principles of sportsmanship and the benefits of team play from this program. At their next meeting in September, they will be seeking board members and volunteers. Check out wyliebulldoglittledribblers.com for more information.
The Bulldog Effect
Heading back into the classroom this year, 74 educators throughout our district will be using hands-on learning activities, subject-specific tools, technology, and real-life experiences to teach Wylie’s students thanks to your support of the Wylie Education Foundation. The Foundation was able to provide $64,000 worth of grants across the district and this is just one of the many ways your support impacts the students and teachers. This year’s annual dinner, themed “Bulldogs, Boots & Bling”, has Stoney LaRue headlining the entertainment with Wylie graduate and 2022 Abilene Idol winner Abby French opening. Mark your calendar for November 14 and visit Wyliebef.org or call 325-660-0292 to reserve your table.
Orders Up!
Be sure to order your high school yearbook, The Growl, when they are available. The Wylie Growl magazine will not run the senior photo section in our May issue as it has done in the past. Additionally, yearbooks will no longer be ordered through the school district. Visit buytheyearbook.com to purchase yearbooks for any of the Wylie campuses. Prices will go up after November 24.
Marching for the “W”
Sixty hours…yes, 60! That’s how many hours the members of the Pure Gold Band rehearsed during their two-and-a-half-week summer practice, and with good reason says band director Kyle McDonald. “We have four contests this year and it’s a state year.” McDonald says competition begins on Sept. 30 in Odessa, with the UIL contest in San Antonio Oct. 14, and then the area contest in Lubbock on Oct. 28. “We need to be one of the top two bands at that [area] contest to advance to state.” In the meantime, Bulldog fans can enjoy hearing the band set the tone at football games and pep rallies, as well as see their UIL show called “Forged”, which is a creative performance about making the Greek god Zues’s hammer. Pure Gold Band, we can’t wait to see all your hard work paying off and hope you get the “W” this season! #WEBELIEVE
Now Playing: Fall Sports
Fall sports are in full swing. Wylie coaches discuss growth, high expectations, and leadership as they share a quick outlook on the season ahead.
Swimming & Diving
“We are excited about the growth of our Wylie ISD Swim and Dive programs! Both junior highs and high school will see a record number of students this year. We are looking to have between 80-90 swimmers in our programs consisting of junior high and high school swimmers. We have two seniors that will be returning and leading our high school team this season. Wylie ISD Swim and Dive has come a long way in the past three years. We had eleven total swimmers before starting the junior high program in 2021. Coach Schlauch has done an amazing job with our divers, and we look for that program to continue its progress as well! It’s going to be an amazing year for Wylie Swim and Dive!” – Coach Casey Pacheco
Volleyball
“Our expectations are high year in and out – this 2023 team is no different. We are excited to build on the success from last year and push for one round deeper in the playoffs. We have eight returners with five of those being seniors; a total of 6 seniors on the roster.” – Coach Shay Cox
Cross-Country
“We are really excited and looking forward to the 2023 season. We have a strong group of varsity returners on both girls’ and boys’ teams. For the girls’ team, we have two returning seniors, Nena Modi and Rozlyn Rumsey. We also have returning junior JoJo Adkins and sophomore Marisa Dudley. These form a strong group, who along with the addition of sophomore Emerie Nicholson, will expect to fight for a district championship. On the boy’s side, we return seniors Daniel Abila, Evan Ashley, Foster Cave and Ian Driscoll. Add to that juniors Seth Bergan and Colten Stevens, we are also looking forward to fighting for a district championship. We were young last season and are going to rely on some hard-earned maturity to guide the team this season. We are looking forward to the season and ready to get started.” – Coach Jody Harvey
Tennis
“Our expectation for the tennis team is to get to the State tournament each fall. Our team season is in the fall. We had tryouts in July and are currently 8-2. Team season goes from August 1 to the end of October. Our individual season starts up in January where last year we had 6 kids qualify for the State tournament. As far as rankings go, we are currently ranked third in 5A. We have great senior leadership this year, and I have very high expectations for our team.” – Coach Adam Cherry
