Teachers and staff of Wylie ISD may need to be prepared to leave this year’s opening meeting with hurting faces and stitches in their sides, which is a common side-effect connected to the guest speaker slated to speak to them as they prepare for the upcoming school year.
Author of the book “Go See the Principal” and social media sensation, Gerry Brooks, will speak to the teachers and staff about being responsible for their own personal climate and culture in the workplace. A subject he is very passionate about. He also seeks to offer teaching strategies and leadership methods that are positive and constructive.
Terry Hagler, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum for Wylie ISD, said Mr. Brooks connects well with teachers.
“He is very encouraging, motivating and inspirational,” said Hagler. “He has a great sense of humor that creates a positive, wonderful back-to-school experience for our teachers and staff.”
Brooks, who is well-known for his humorous portrayal of working in education, is familiar with the challenges and opportunities that come with teaching since he has worked in education for more than 20 years. Brook’s educational experience includes teaching third grade, working as an intervention specialist, and serving as an administrator.
Brooks originally began creating his funny videos to encourage his own teachers and staff and now has a following of more than 500,000 people across Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. He has also appeared in numerous media outlets including CNN and The Washington Times.
Jackie Powell, Communication Director for Wylie ISD, said the district is very excited to hear Mr. Brooks speak and that his passion for education will be well-received and applicable.
“We are thrilled to have Mr. Brooks at our opening meeting as we kick-off a new school year! Anyone who has seen his videos on social media knows he is hysterical and relatable as he talks about education,” she said. “There is no doubt that the Wylie ISD teachers and staff will have a fun first day back!”
