Claire Preston was crowned Homecoming Queen during homecoming ceremonies Oct. 27. She was one of five girls nominated for the honor by their peers.
The other nominees were Reagan Chaka, Raquel Davis, Julia Lovelace and Mariah Maldonado.
Claire is the daughter of Matt and Shona Preston and the granddaughter of Harold and Susan Preston, Betty Sugarek and the late Donald Sugarek. She attends First Baptist Church where she is a member of the youth leadership team, teaches middle school bible study weekly, has served as worship leader, and class director of Vacation Bible School. Claire is also a camp counselor for Middle School Camp at Heart of Texas Baptist Encampment and Mission Camp. She attended a youth mission trip to Arizona in 2016 and Mission Arlington in 2017.
Claire is a captain for the Wylie Belles Drill Team is active in Student Council, National Honor Society, PALS and is the secretary of the Senior Class.
She was in the Wylie Theater Department’s dance cast in Footloose and the Little Mermaid. She is a member of the Abilene Philharmonic Belles, is a Rhinestone Girl for the Western Heritage Classic and received the Star Student Award 2017 Gold by the Abilene Reporter-News.
After graduation, Claire plans to attend Texas A&M University majoring in Biomedical Science.
Reagan Chaka
Reagan is the daughter of J’Lyn Robinson, and Ted and Sue Chaka. She is the granddaughter of Katrina Robinson, Ted Chaka Sr. and Dottie Chaka.
Reagan is a member of Beltway Baptist Church, is active in Young Life and attends a life group at Beltway. Reagan also has been a volunteer at Lyndale Care Home and Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She represents Me and You Shirt Company.
Reagan also is a member of Student Council and National Honor Society and received the Star Student Award 2017 Bronze by the Abilene Reporter-News.
After graduation, Reagan plans on attending Texas Tech in hopes of becoming a dermatologist.
Raquel Davis
Raquel is the daughter of Josh and Eliza Davis.
She attends The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -Day Saints where she is the president of the 16 and 17 year old girls group.
Raquel has been head drum major, president of the band, vice-president of the National Honor Society and a member of Student Council, Student 2 Student, Friends of Rachel Club and PALS.
She has competed in UIL Academics and runs track.
Raquel is a member of the Abilene Philharmonic Belles and Beaus and is an alumni of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program. She is also a private tutor. Raquel received the Star Student Award 2017 Gold by the Abilene Reporter-News.
After graduation, Raquel plans on attending Brigham Young University to study pre-med. She would love to serve an 18-month mission for her church in 2019.
Julia Lovelace
Julia is the daughter of Paul and Teri Lovelace and the granddaughter of James and Mary Brooks.
Julia attends Beltway Park Church where she is a Life Group Leader.
Julia is a team captain for the varsity basketball, a junior class officer, an FCA officer, and a member of PALS, National Honor Society and Student Council. She also received a commended award in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Julia also is a member of the Philharmonic Belles and Beaus.
After graduation, Julia plans on attending Texas A&M University.
Mariah Maldonado
Mariah is the daughter of Lorica and Daniel Edmonson and Elfido Maldonado. She attends Beltway Baptist Church.
Mariah has been involved in Student Council, For Club and Art Club. She is a member of Ambassadors in Missions, coaches a girl’s soccer team and is active in Characters for Kiddos.
Mariah works at Bucketheads and the Beehive Restaurant. She also represents Me & You T-Shirt company.
After graduation, Mariah plans on attending the Abilene Christian University to major in education.
The Wylie young men who were chosen to crown the Homecoming Queen nominees during the ceremony were Payton Amonett, son of Aaron and Jenny Amonett; Shawn Harlow, son of Russell and Tonya Harlow; Connor Merket, son of Rod and Sherri Merket; Quentin Overby, son of Benton and Amanda Overby and Nolan Shelton, son of Norman and Jackie Shelton.
